Exploring VJ practice using documentary film

This project identified key themes of expressive interaction for VJs. VJs are visual artists who use digital media to express themselves to an audience during a live audiovisual performance. We beleive that those designing for the expressive use of technology in VJ practice or other related domains such as electronic music can gain insight from this articulation of expressive interaction amongst VJs.

Our study followed a novel qualitative method that was designed to be sensitive to the subtle and tacit nature of expression. This approach utilised the watching and re-editing of a documentary film to inspire the VJs to reflect upon their practices.
